Tips for flying with kids
Our European trips all started with a flight from Izmir, and the stroller came with us every time. Here are the tips that made flight days easier. Airline rules differ, so always check the conditions of your own ticket.
When booking
- Seats: Seat selection is often extra on budget airlines. Choosing seats when you book is easier than trying to sit together later.
- Under 2: On most airlines infants travelling on a parent’s lap do not need their own seat, but they still need an infant ticket.
- Flight time: Flights that match your child’s nap time can make the journey easier; very early morning flights can make the whole day tiring.
Stroller and luggage
- Stroller to the gate: Most airlines let you take the stroller to the aircraft door. You hand it over at the gate and usually get it back at the door or on the baggage belt.
- A folding stroller: A light stroller that folds with one hand is a huge help at the airport. Ours also carried our bags all day; it was a helper, not a burden.
- Protective cover: Strollers checked in as luggage can get scratched; a simple cover does the job.
- Cabin bag: Keep spare clothes, wet wipes, snacks and your child’s favourite toy in the cabin.
Security check
- Baby food, milk and liquids needed for a child are usually exempt from the 100 ml rule, but you may be asked to show them separately.
- The stroller also goes through the scanner; be ready to fold it.
- A toilet and water break before boarding makes the flight more comfortable.
On board
- Ear pressure: Drinking, a dummy or chewing during take-off and landing helps balance ear pressure.
- Keeping busy: Colouring books, sticker books, downloaded cartoons and kids’ headphones.
- Layers: Planes can be chilly; keep a light cardigan to hand.
