Documents and money

Passports (including the child’s) and their expiry dates
Visa page / visa approval documents
Printed or offline copies of flight, train and hotel bookings
Travel health insurance policy
Parental consent letter for the child (if one parent is not travelling)
Bank card + spare card, a little cash in euros
Museum and city passes, QR codes of tickets you have bought

Stroller and carrying

The stroller came with us on every trip; we hung our backpacks on it and used it as a carrier. Being able to fold it quickly helps a lot in crowds and on stairs.

Easy-fold stroller, close to cabin size
Rain cover / sunshade
Cup holder or small bag that clips onto the stroller
Lock or short bike lock (outside cafés)
Light backpack (that can hang on the stroller)

Children’s clothes

Outfits for the number of days + 2 (good for layering)
Light jacket or raincoat
Comfortable walking shoes + spare shoes/slippers
Pyjamas and underwear (with spares)
Hat, sunglasses
Depending on the season: beanie, gloves or swimsuit

Health and care

Fever reducer and painkiller (children’s dose)
Regular medicines and their prescription
Thermometer
Plasters, antiseptic
High-factor sunscreen
Wet and dry wipes, hand sanitiser
Toothbrush, children’s toothpaste, comb

Snacks and water on the go

Water bottle (you can refill it at fountains in many cities)
Non-perishable snacks such as dried fruit, biscuits and crackers
Small lidded container
Bib and a small pack of wet wipes

Entertainment: planes, trains and queues

A small favourite toy or soft toy
Colouring book and a few crayons
Sticker book
Tablet/phone + kids’ headphones, downloaded cartoons
Small card game or puzzle

Electronics

Phone chargers
Power bank
European plug adapter (if needed)
eSIM or roaming data package
Offline maps (download the city in Google Maps)

Handy at the hotel

Small laundry detergent (for washing in the sink)
Folding clothes hanger / pegs
Night light
Laundry bag

Quick tips

Think about the stroller and backpack before the suitcase: they are what you will use most during the day.
On intercity trains, medium suitcases are much easier to carry than large ones.
Keep tickets and bookings offline on your phone; stations don’t always have signal.
